Hello! I am Lauren Lucerne, the creator of the Mommy and Me music classes which will be held at the Grist Mill Fitness Center this summer, 2017. First, I would like to thank you for visiting my website and considering to have me as a part of your child's life. This is a privilege that I do not take lightly!
Without getting too poetic, I believe that music and music-making is one of the most incredible aspects of humanity. Music brings people into the moment. When you hear live music, you are experiencing it in the present--and when it is gone, it is gone. Being involved in or listening to music is somewhat of a surreal or magical experience, especially for children. Listening to live music is most likely a child's first experience with believing and experiencing something that they cannot see with their own eyes. However, with mommy and me music classes, children can begin to make connections with how music is made, what can make music, and how they themselves can partake in some of the magic of music-making. With mommy and me classes, you can witness your child making these connections and help foster their creativity and understanding of a phenomenon that has taken place throughout most of humanity's existence. Along with musical experiences, children will have ample opportunities to make friends, have social connections, and cooperate while learning to work with others. When your children reflect back on their childhood, music may be one of their earliest and fondest memories.
As nice as all of that sounds, however, I am a woman who needs some background and research before I believe anything. I am sure some of you are like me in this regard, so I have posted a link to some research that was conducted at Northwestern University and then published in The Journal of Neuroscience. This article describes how children who have experienced learning music "show evidence of measurable changes in the brain. The researchers believe the musical training caused those changes, allowing the students to process sounds more easily. That increased ability directly translates into improved reading and speech skills" (Edghill, "Study: Music really does make kids smarter?").
If you have any more questions or would like to contact me before Mommy and Me Music Classes, my email is lucerne511@gmail.com. I would be happy to help answer any questions or get to know information about your little ones!!!
Have a great start to your summer, and stay cool!
Best,
Lauren Lucerne
